Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP™)

LAMP is an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) approach designed to give individuals who are nonverbal a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves through a speech generating device. This course will cover the components of LAMP: readiness to learn, engaging the learner through joint engagement, and learning language through a unique and consistent motor plan paired with an auditory signal and a natural consequence. Discussion will include how this approach addresses the core language deficits of autism, device features that are beneficial to teaching language, and how to use those features to implement LAMP components. Videos will be used to illustrate the treatment components.

PRCs language systems and devices will be used to illustrate treatment components; however, LAMP principles can be applied to other products. Due to the limited duration of this course, there is no dedicated hands-on time with devices .

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Define the role of readiness to learn and shared focus in the implementation of AAC with children with ASD.
  2. Explain the importance of using motor patterning to develop motor automaticity for children with ASD who use AAC.
  3. Examine multisensory convergence and the implications of how interference in this system disrupts speech and language development.
  4. Discuss implementation strategies for teaching children with ASD to use AAC.
  5. Discuss strategies for analyzing the efficacy of communication treatment.

PRC’-Saltillo's LAMP Words for Life language system and devices will be used to illustrate treatment components; however LAMP principles can be applied to other products. 


Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) Extended Course: Highlighting Local Clients

In-person Only

Length: 1.5 Days
ASHA CEUs: .8 / 8 Contact Hours

This course covers the same material presented in the one-day LAMP course. 

In addition, this extended workshop will include videotaping of up to three local clients chosen by the host center on the day prior to the training. Those videos will be used to illustrate the components of LAMP and to facilitate discussion regarding assessment and implementation.

The videotaped clients are eligible to receive loaner devices for one month following this basic workshop to trial the LAMP approach. Those team members responsible for implementation need to be present throughout the training and would need to receive specific device training either through online e-trainings or through the local PRC consultant. 

There is no dedicated hands-on time with devices in this course.


Moving Forward with LAMP

In-person

Length: 1 Day

This course is designed to further the communication partners ability to implement the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning approach at different language stages and across environments. The language structure of the LAMP Words for Life language system and use of features to support language learning will be explored. Accent and iPad devices with LAMP WFL will be provided for hands-on learning, depending on class size, one set of equipment for every two participants.  Participants may bring their own Accent and/or iPad devices if desired. Discussion will include assessing current language level, setting goals for developmental progression, and analyzing data logging. The presenter will cover a variety of strategies and supports to support language development such as expanding vocabulary in natural environments, modeling, teaching the motor plan, and how to use aided language input. Videotaped sessions will be used for group discussion about strategies that work and common mistakes. Suggestions for language development in school settings will also be addressed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Identify how to modify the student's current AAC system and use device features to support language learning.
  2. Analyze the current expressive language level of an AAC user and give suggestions as to the next step for expanding language and vocabulary
  3. Describe how to provide access to vocabulary across settings and activities to promote readiness to learn and generalization
  4. Give examples of appropriate levels of prompting and modeling to develop independent communication

Videotaped sessions will be used for group discussion about strategies that work and common mistakes. Suggestions for language development in school settings will also be addressed.

Due to the hands-on training this workshop offers, seats are limited to 40.

Moving Forward with LAMP on iOS

Length: 2.5 hours

This online course is designed to further the communication partner’s ability to implement the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning approach at different language stages and across environments. The language structure of the LAMP Words for Life language system and use of device features to support language learning will be explored. Participants will receive some hands-on time and will need access to an iOS dedicated device or the LAMP Words for Life app on iPad. (Professionals who evaluate and support individuals who use AAC will have an option to become an App Partner and receive a promo code prior to the class. Prerequisites for this class are required before applying. Instructions will follow registration). Discussion will include assessing current language level, setting goals for developmental progression, and analyzing data logging. The presenter will cover a variety of strategies and supports to support language development such as expanding vocabulary in natural environments, modeling, teaching the motor plan, and how to use aided language input. Videotaped sessions will be used for group discussion about strategies that work and common mistakes. Suggestions for language development in school settings will also be addressed.

Previous attendance at a 1 day or 1.5 day Center for AAC & Autism LAMP Workshop is required to register for this course.
